Specialist support staff

All DCJ staff have a responsibility to support Aboriginal and culturally diverse organisations and communities. Some contract management teams may also employ Aboriginal or culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) staff, or others with close connections to a community and community leaders. These roles may include the management of contracts and relationships with Aboriginal and culturally diverse organisations.

Specialist support staff and community representatives can support contract managers and others involved in contract management. Their specific roles will be defined by their job description and may include the responsibilities below.

Responsibilities of specialist support staff

General

  • Perform all duties listed as responsibilities of our contract managers.
  • Keep team informed of cultural-specific opportunities and risks to service delivery and funding decisions.

Relationship management

  • Build understanding of community and culture where the service is being delivered.
  • Understand Aboriginal and CALD service methodology and outcomes to ensure service providers are delivering services as identified by these communities.
  • Review performance reports and/or data submitted by service providers to ensure performance evaluation is linked to community outcomes.
  • Support community engagement to ensure community partnership and involvement in decision-making around service delivery.

Communication and consultation

  • Use cultural knowledge and lived experience to de-escalate and respond to issues and complaints.
  • Use culturally appropriate communication methods.
  • Participate in and connect with Aboriginal and CALD Reference Groups, interagency networks, and community consultations mechanisms.
